Left Tennant Creek, bound for Longreach Waterhole at Elliot but the road was closed, probably due to recent flooding. This was supposed to be similar to Camooweal for a free camp so we were looking forward to it.
The roadside is changing all the time from the colour of the soil to the amount and size of vegetation. We are getting more tall trees now and some lovely blossoms but quick pics from the moving car don't do them justice.
Quick search on Wiki Camps for something closer to Mataranka and we decided on an old abandoned WW11 Airstrip at 70ks south of Mataranka.
We eventually found it via a dirt road with a few large potholes but not too bad and along with 2 other vans spent the night on the biggest site we’ve ever been. It’s huge and could have handled 100’s of vans and has in the past. On the whole each free camp has been litter free and we’ve been impressed that people take all their rubbish with them (as they should). Unfortunately at the airstrip some had left beer bottles around and some abandoned furniture at the end but otherwise it was pretty clean. Another campfire dinner and early to bed to avoid the bugs.

This bush was scattered all along the roadside but very hard
to get a good photo, below is a close up of the flower |
Another lovely sunset at the end of the airstrip
